5 Steps to Improving Self-Esteem

Break the Cycle of Self-Criticism

There’s nothing wrong with striving to be the best. However, this can lead to a vicious cycle of self-criticism. You begin looking into every area of your life, finding more and more flaws as you go. This turns into a pile of doubt that prevents you from seeing your achievements.

If you feel like you’re failing at everything, it’s time to break the cycle. Ignore every criticism in your mind, and look for accomplishments you can latch onto. Feel insecure in a new job? Focus on the fact that you got hired/promoted. Feel like your house is messy and cluttered? Think of how hard you worked to get that home and those belongings. Shift your perspective to the positive steps that got you this far, not the potential improvements you could be making.

Focus on What Is, Not What’s to Come

Low self-esteem often stems from future assumptions. This is going to happen, that is going to happen, and you won’t be able to handle any of it. Rather than looking to the future, focus on what’s happening here at now. You can’t predict what’s to come, nor can you predict your reactions to those circumstances. Keep your mind on your reality, and trust that the future will work itself out – just like all your experiences before.

Compliment Other People

This may sound counter-productive, but positivity is contagious. When you compliment others, you inevitably feel better about yourself. They smile, you smile, and you may even get a compliment in return. Furthermore, looking for good qualities in others will help you see the many good qualities you possess.

Distance Yourself from Toxic People

Is there someone in your life who persistently puts you down or makes you feel bad about your circumstances? You don’t need that kind of negativity. Identify the toxic people in your life, and create as much distance as possible. The transition may be tough at first, but you have to do what is best for your mental health. Do Something You Love

Think about the thing that brings you the most joy in life. Then find a way to do more of it. If you love to travel, create a bank account that acts as a travel fund. Set weekly or monthly savings goals so you can enjoy a new adventure at least once a year. If you love to paint, look for art clubs or painting classes in your area. Set up a paint studio in your home, even if it’s just a corner in your living room.
