Bipolar Disorder Counseling

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. It is also known as manic-depressive illness, and most scientists agree there is no single cause but many factors acting together to produce the illness or increase risk.

Bipolar Counseling

Bipolar disorder involves an extreme swing of ups and downs. These episodes are detrimental to relationships, job and school performance. In the worse cases, untreated bipolar disorder can lead to suicide. Look for mood changes such as a long period of feeling “high,” or overly happy or outgoing; racing thoughts and fast talking; sleeping little or not being tired; having an unrealistic belief in ability; impulsive behavior and engaging in high-risk behaviors. This is the manic state, and it’s often followed by intense lows. These episodes of extreme highs and lows can recur over time, with the person feeling relatively symptom-free and level in between.

With treatment, people with bipolar disorder can lead full and productive lives. All Urban Balance therapists look at treatment from a strengths perspective. Typically, sessions occur once per week but you can increase or decrease frequency depending on progress and need.
