Karen Loethen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who enjoys working with adults and adolescents through individual, couples, family, and group therapies. Karen earned her master’s degree in Social Work from St. Louis University’s School of Social Work in 1994. She has worked in the addictions field, in community mental health, inpatient and outpatient, in a full-Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) milieu, dual diagnosis, case management, and renal social work. To address the goals and needs of each client, Karen uses components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and elements from a variety of other Client-Centered, Humanistic schools of practice. Karen is a member of the Secular Therapist Project and she is trained in EMDR trauma treatment. Her clinical interests include anxiety disorders, mood disorders, life transitions, parenting, adoption triad Issues, relationship Issues, self-harm, eating disorders, addiction, mindfulness, self-esteem and self actualization, and religious/spirituality-based concerns.
Karen believes in building a therapeutic relationship on authenticity, dignity, trust, and empowerment. She puts work, prep, and forethought into each session in order to make the time as useful as possible. She continuously develops her knowledge, skill, and understanding base in order to provide her clients with that which they are seeking: hope, healing, and wellness. She affirms that, through mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation skills, insight, education, and self actualization, you will move towards the hope and change you have been looking for.
